04/20/2003 10:16 AM Hank McComas - The ramp most convenient to the ten thousand islands and to Chokoloskee Bay is the ramp in back of the Everglades National Park Visitors Center in Everglades City. Unless most park facilities, there is no entrance fee to reach this visitors center as the center is in the city not in the park. There is a large grassy area for parking and overnight storage of trailers and cars. The area is protected and safe. There is a restrooom at the visitors center. Overnight permits and reservations for camping sites and chickees are required. There is a 10 dollar registration fee, irrespective of the length of you stay.
The park service provides a small cart to help transport your gear down the narrow alley way to the small concrete ramp at the back of the building. At low tide the ramp does not extend to the water. The mud here is deep and soft. There is a hose at the top of the ramp fro drinking water and for removing the mud on the return trip. If you are outbound at low tide, expect to live with the mud for a while.
