03 - Lower Chesapeake Bay






The Lower Chesapeake Bay from the Potomac to Capes Charles and Henry is the final mixing area of the Chesapeake Bay estuary where the Bay finally meets the open Atlantic ocean.




Long rivers, the James, York and Rappahannock, empty in from the western shore while a greatly reduced number of rivers meander through the lower DelMarVa penninsula to empty into broad bays and marshes. The Eastern side of the shore gradually narrows into a long triangular shape with barrier islands facing the Atlantic and marsh and pine lands on the Bay side.
