| Here are some excellent books on sea kayaking amd associated topics available at Amazon.com. Look for topic specific recommendations of books at the bottom of each page throughout this web site.
If you read only one of these books, read "Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble" by Matt Broze. For the visual learner there are several video presentations included in the list. However, none of these books will provide a better learning experience than a kayak course from a certified trainer such as available from my friends at http://www.kayaktraining.com. There are certified trainers available in many areas of the country.
Trainers are certified by two different certifying organizations, the British Canoe Union (BCU) and the American Canoe Association (ACA). Each organization trains and certifies instructors in an equivalent progression of 5 levels of qualification. The higher the level the more skills the particular instructor is certified as qualified to teach. The two systems teach slightly different techniques for many of the basic kayak skills, but both cover essentially the same topics. Some instructors are certified in both systems. Always inquire about the certification level of the instructor. Any instructor serious about kayak training will be certified by at least one of these organizations.
